Duwamish River photos

The Duwamish River is just barely south of downtown Seattle.  It was widened and straightened at some point to become an industrial waterway for the city.  More general info can be found here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duwamish_River

The river is also a federal Superfund site.  The Superfund List is a roster of the most toxic contaminated sites in the country.  More info about the pollution and the cleanup can be found here:  http://www.duwamishcleanup.org

These photos were taken in June of 2009.  The Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition is kind enough to offer free tours of the river.  If you live in the Seattle area, definitely check them out via the link above.

Moon

I just saw Moon at SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival).  I'll try not to reveal anything too critical here.  Moon is an independent film starring Sam Rockwell and directed by Duncan Jones.  Sam Rockwell plays an Astronaut who runs a mining facility on the moon.  Helium 3 is being mined to provide fuel for the fusion reactors on Earth, which provide clean energy to our planet.  Sam is on a 3 year contract to run the facility & machinery.  The facility is on the far side of the moon and the communications satellite has broken down.  Contact with Earth is a fairly rare thing, and definitely not live.  As his contract is about to expire and he is about to go home, something strange happens...

Sam Rockwell definitely gives one of the year's best acting performances.  This film is as much science fiction as it is character drama.  The story starts out as a fairly slow unveiling of the situation, but becomes a slow boil that's a blast at the end.  The special effects, the effects, and scenery all feel organic and wonderful.  The film should open up for limited and general release soon.

Moon should be on your list of must-see movies for this year.  While Star Trek was a great action-packed special effects reboot of the franchise that focuses on the grand, Moon takes a deep look at one man.

Salumi Cured Meats is a storefront / restaurant in the Pioneer Square area of Seattle.  They have a spectacular Zagat rating... absolutely wonderful Italian fare.  The business is run by Mario Batali's father.  Check out the store's official website here: http://www.salumicuredmeats.com/.  These photos were taken in March of 2009.

Goodbye, Jess

Jessica Porter died today. She lost her battle with pulmonary hypertension disorder. I am happy I got to say goodbye before the end. I spent three lovely afternoons at her bedside on an emergency trip out to Utah to see her last month. There were many fun bowling nights, many fun midnight breakfasts at Village Inn. I fondly remember our group's collective amusement when the single's ward folks would stroll in.

I'm glad I was able to spend some good afternoons with you recently. Your strength was up a little and you were confusing the hell out of your doctors, in typical Jess spirit. I'm glad we got to catch up on the last 4 years since I moved away... the memory of the content grin on your face while Melissa was massaging your arms is burned into my mind. I wish I could have stayed just a little bit longer.

You have some great friends, and you'll truly be missed.

I shot these about six weeks ago.  Seattle is a very beautiful place, especially at night.

These photos were taken in Paris, France in 2006.  Notre Dame is a wonderful cathedral.  Again, this is from my archive.  These made it into my studio, but never onto the web.

Nice, France - 2006

Wow, I can't believe I forgot to post these.  All of my other photo sets from my France trip in 2006 were up, but this one somehow slipped through the cracks.  My photos from Nice were on display in my studio for a couple of months shortly after I got back.  When I dusted these off a couple of days ago, I felt incredibly nostalgic.  Nice is beautiful and I'd definitely love to go back there someday.

Seatac snow

I have posted some photos from my Christmas trip to the East Coast.  I spent some time in the Washington DC / Northern Virginia / Baltimore area recently.  The photo slideshow starts out with my escape from Seatac Airport, then has photos from the National Cathedral in DC, the George Washington Masonic Temple in Alexandria, Virginia.  Last are photos from Baltimore, Maryland.  The majority of which were shot in Lexington Market.

I was "embedded" with the Obama contingent of the Seattle Pride Parade in June of 2008. These photos include shots of the parade participants, the crowd, and some of the Washington National Obama Delegates. I walked the entire parade route with the group; it was definitely quite the event.

The Democratic State Convention was held in Spokane, WA during the month of June. There are a ton of photos here, and lots more that didn't make the cut. This was an awesome, grueling three-day experience. I showed up as an Alternate and found myself seated as a Delegate.

The Democratic CD caucuses were held on 5/17/2008. The caucus for the 7th CD was held in Seattle, WA. Delegates for the Democratic National Convention were elected. I believe the first Iraqi-American delegate, Majid AL-Bahadli, was elected.

11th LD Caucus - WA

Note: A couple of corrections. My original count of the LD caucus totals were for my congressional district only. The 11th LD totals can be found here: http://www.11thlddems.org/

Obama 26, Clinton 10.

Also, I had a couple of inaccuracies that were addressed in my post about my caucus experience. I got the rules a little confused, those have been fixed in my previous post as well. Whew, this is all overwhelming to this newbie. :)

On 2/8/2008, Barack Obama held a rally at Key Arena in Seattle. He's a hell of a public speaker and the venue was completely packed. Man, it'd be nice to have press access to one of these events and a better telephoto lens. :)
